Kathrin Africa in search

About Kathrin Stalder

As a Swiss, Kathrin always jokes about her tiny apartment. But as an open-minded artist, she has a big house in her heart that opens for everyone she encounters.

Born in 1949’s Switzerland, Kathrin has a childlike instinct to perceive everyday-object in a different way. To Kathrin, both lives and streets are artists’ stages and studios. She collects material from the streets. She recognizes insignificant objects, and starts a new experimental landscape.

Kathrin loves basically everything that is handmade. Creativity has always been centered in her daily life. Every year, Kathrin volunteers teaching arts in African townships. She teaches villagers to “play” with art in the easiest way because she believes that art belongs to everyone. She believes that art exists through sharing. She believes that art is everywhere.

Kathrin creates different works in different places while she is traveling. Wherever she goes, she starts by embracing foreign environments, and she ends by creating surprises and artworks. Kathrin, like many other artists, is gifted of rediscovering beauty in our familiar city.

Originally a nursing major, Kathrin develops her unique style by her efforts and enthusiasm. Her nursing background also made her an artist who enjoys sharing ideas and emotion to others. By doing art, she believes it somehow brings joy and cure. Her works mainly focus on: conceptual jewelry, installation, and paper-book collage. She is also known for the graffiti- knitting project in Basel.

“Art is communication that links you and me.”~ Kathrin Stalder

Kathrin is from Switzerland. She likes to travel and make original hand-made mails to friends. She believes that art can be a connection between you and me; it will awaken our feelings and emotions that we seldom show. Once she realized that how much mails she had received from her best friend, then she got an idea to use them to create new artwork. For Kathrin, memory can always be looked at it again, and to be transformed into a new look.

For Garden City, Kathrin chose 15 works to show, including books, collages and sculptures. They are all made with paper, with sewing machine going over it.

Paper can build an endless space that reflects us in different times. Correspondence brings out a relationship with outside world, but also with an inner self. It’s an ongoing process like a thread of sewing machine that keeps going forwards.

“ I take nothing with me. I start everything in Taiwan. Maybe just a suitcase, a little bit of clothes. I dont’t know anything about the country, but I am ready to embrace everything I see.”~ Kathrin Stalder

Kathrin Stalder was born in Switzerland, where she lived miles from the sea. As a result she always yearned to see the calmness and vastness of the ocean. She felt it contained all the memories, emotions and creativity of the world.

The first time she came to Taiwan, the ocean was where she started creating her artwork. She collected abandoned objects, which people had left around and transformed them into something new. These objects ultimately became her artworks of today. Kathrin Stalder’s artwork caught Suho’s attention and we decided to invite her to share her findings at the Suho Memorial Paper Museum.

The creation of The Suho Memorial Paper Museum was also a transformation. When the parents of its founder, Chen Ruey Huey, passed away in a plane accident, the grief she had to go through healed over time and slowly grew into positive energy which allowed her to accomplish the dream they had had. This museum which initially contained sorrow and grief transformed into bright warm light. Over these past few years, Suho has used paper as a medium to spread how important being connected with nature is.

Suho is turning 20 years old this year and is going to celebrate this special day with Kathrin Stalder. Using a month of her collected abandon objects found throughout Taiwan and combining them with personal handmade paper objects, such as books, lunch boxes and maps, we have created an exhibition which details the importance of combining paper with art. For local Taiwanese people it may seem like a mirror. It gives us a chance to understand how rich life already is and how life is constantly in between the process of receiving and losing.

There are many important moments in life; most of the time they are the ones you can never forget. However, we always forget the little details that actually build us as a person and form what we are now. Through the vision of art we realise that time is the most important gift a person can have. Within art the dead come alive once again. We have to believe that every new step we take can always be another new world for us to explore.

Dear Friends:

Artist Kathrin Stalder (Li-Ching, Wang) is now back again to Taiwan! It’s her joy to be invited by Suho Paper Memorial Museum for an solo exhibition in October. We all look forward to seeing her new works, which always come with her adventurous journey.

To Kathrin, bowls and tea cups are objects that impressed her a lot from last trip in Taiwan. Their round shape not only gives a beautiful and secure feeling, but also expresses memory of living. ” Lost and Found” has always been the core of Kathrin’s working attitude as an artist. She looks at what she found and reuses them. By walking along the traces of history, she sees beauty.
