“ I take nothing with me. I start everything in Taiwan. Maybe just a suitcase, a little bit of clothes. I dont’t know anything about the country, but I am ready to embrace everything I see.”~ Kathrin Stalder

Kathrin Stalder was born in Switzerland, where she lived miles from the sea. As a result she always yearned to see the calmness and vastness of the ocean. She felt it contained all the memories, emotions and creativity of the world.

The first time she came to Taiwan, the ocean was where she started creating her artwork. She collected abandoned objects, which people had left around and transformed them into something new. These objects ultimately became her artworks of today. Kathrin Stalder’s artwork caught Suho’s attention and we decided to invite her to share her findings at the Suho Memorial Paper Museum.

The creation of The Suho Memorial Paper Museum was also a transformation. When the parents of its founder, Chen Ruey Huey, passed away in a plane accident, the grief she had to go through healed over time and slowly grew into positive energy which allowed her to accomplish the dream they had had. This museum which initially contained sorrow and grief transformed into bright warm light. Over these past few years, Suho has used paper as a medium to spread how important being connected with nature is.

Suho is turning 20 years old this year and is going to celebrate this special day with Kathrin Stalder. Using a month of her collected abandon objects found throughout Taiwan and combining them with personal handmade paper objects, such as books, lunch boxes and maps, we have created an exhibition which details the importance of combining paper with art. For local Taiwanese people it may seem like a mirror. It gives us a chance to understand how rich life already is and how life is constantly in between the process of receiving and losing.

There are many important moments in life; most of the time they are the ones you can never forget. However, we always forget the little details that actually build us as a person and form what we are now. Through the vision of art we realise that time is the most important gift a person can have. Within art the dead come alive once again. We have to believe that every new step we take can always be another new world for us to explore.

To Kathrin, bowls and tea cups are objects that impressed her a lot from last trip in Taiwan. Their round shape not only gives a beautiful and secure feeling, but also expresses memory of living. ” Lost and Found” has always been the core of Kathrin’s working attitude as an artist. She looks at what she found and reuses them. By walking along the traces of history, she sees beauty.

Knit Taipei invitation

Dear

Zurich Summer Festival,

Kathrin

About Li-Ching and Exhibition

Ninety sunny days

Li-Ching, the name we gave to Kathrin. Because Kathrin hopes that her name has the meaning of “bringing blessings and happiness to everyone”, which is just like her works, always full of surprises and warmth. Li Ching in Chinese means actually ” Here comes the Sun”. By the arrival of Kathrin, I gradually recognize the energetic and vivid art scene in Taiwan as well. If you put those little elements in my daily lives together, such as handcrafting, metalworking, woodworking, photography, galleries, restaurants, cafés, architectures, beaches, designs and bookstores, they creates interesting sparks which were never expected. Now, I’m proud to be a cultural ambassador of Taipei, taking her wandering in the city to collect ideas. What Kathrin will see and make in these three months are going to be presented in the exhibition. I am sure it’s going to be a very sunny period of time we have together.

“ I just play! Play with the materials” 每當別人問Kathrin怎麼發現這樣的創作模式、或是怎麼創作一件作品時,她總是不知所措,像個孩子般的邀請大家也打開雙眼,看看周遭。 “You can also do this!

To Be Innocent and Crazy Enough to see Art

In the exhibition, we will present Kathrin’s installation, jewelleries and objects. All of the works were transformed from the materials found during the traveling in Taiwan. “I just play! Play with materials.” Every time when people ask Kathrin how she found the methods of work or how to create a work, she finds it hard to explain since it’s a kind of intuition and taste. She invites people to open their eyes to look around like a child. “ You can also do this!” In the video that we took, she said,” Some people  think that I’m crazy collecting things everywhere, but sometimes we do need a little craziness to encounter different things.”

Come with an empty suitcase. Full return.

Hiroshi Sugimoto, Japanese master of contemporary art, said,” Art, no matter in which times, is a behavior of creating new value, in other words, a behavior of making things from nothing; or, you have to break everything down in order to start it all new. Four hundred years ago, Sen no Rikyū had made tea-drinking from simply daily habit into the tea ceremony, which gave the idea of the possibilities of replacing fine arts with daily materials. Together with his guests to enjoy the possibility of the combinations of different objects,  which in the end formed an unplanned and unique “accidental beauty.”

I like the traits of the accidental beauty, which Kathrin also carried. When She came to Taiwan, beside some necessary clothes and some chocolate, cheese for new friends, there were merely nothing else in her suitcase. Even though she had many great works in Switzerland, she decided to bring none of them. She was ready to open her heart,  and to empty her thoughts. She knew she will be filled with great ideas from Taiwan. When one opens herself fully to the surroundings, those you don’t expect at the beginning turns out to be your destiny; shapes of all things opens up in front of you, and they gathered slowly and naturally, into a great picture.

Throw yourself to the world!”

“ Hey, Look! Isn’t it nice!!?” Kathrin

Task for a traveler

I recalled my time studying in Europe. I traveled from a country far away. I  experienced an journey without any expectation as well, which was a valuable experience in life.  An open mind gives strength to every traveler. It’s like an engine that motivate you to reach even further. And with this attitude carried in the journey, you are also going to inspire those people you meet. They will see how you work hard for beauty, for meeting art.  I believe everyone should go for such a journey, which definitely connects you to the world.

 “Throw yourself to the world!”

When we are busy trooping to our lives ahead, some people are traveling in another way, bending down, looking close to the details of the reality. They slow down and start off again, trying to find the moment of amazement. The task for a traveler is to gently awake those who fell asleep in the city. “Open your eyes, and look! “

“Hey, Look! Isn’t it nice!?” Kathrin says.

Events
